Simple Tips That Yield Healthy, Productive Gardens

The hobby of organic horticulture requires both a green thumb and a great deal of patience. It is an enjoyable way to grow your own nutritious foods that are free of pesticides and other harsh chemicals. It might sound easy, but is it? If you want to have the most professional horticulture skills you can, read the tips in this article. It is important that you allow your plants the chance to gradually adjust to the alteration in temperature and conditions, or you risk shocking them. At first, only leave them outside for a brief period of time. Throughout a week, slowly increase the amount of time that you leave them outside. By the week's end, your plants should then be ready for the big move! You can use the wooden handles of your tools as measurement sticks. You can convert any large handle tool, such as a hoe, shovel, or rake into a measuring tool. Just lay your tool down on the floor then lay a yardstick near the handle. Label the distances using a permanent marker. Now when you go to work in the garden, you should have a ruler that is large at your fingertips! Try to plan a variety of perennials that are slug-proof. Your plants can be destroyed by slugs and snails overnight. They often enjoy feeding on perennials with very smooth and tender leaves. Young plants are a special favorite of theirs. Some perennials are not preferred meals for snails and slugs, especially if their foliage is hairy and tough, or tastes bad. Examples of these include euphorbia, hellebourus and achillea. Others you may want to consider are campanula and heuchera. Fresh mint is a wonderful addition to a herb garden, but it can rapidly take over your entire yard. Stunt their growth a little by planting your mint into a garden container or large pot instead. You can then plant the container down in the ground if you like, but the walls of the container will hold the roots captive, and keep the plant from taking over your garden! You can prevent pests from invading your garden with certain plants and natural materials. Plant marigolds or onions around other vegetables to keep slugs away from them. Keep insects away from shrub and tree seedlings with mulch containing wood ash. These methods prevent use of harsh chemicals. Organic gardening can be described as a healthy hobby that incorporates the beauty of nature, lots of hard work along with lots of patience. This skill utilizes a simple patch of ground to produce healthy, delicious, natural foods. If you do the hard work and take the time, you will learn the ropes of organic horticulture.
